Ax-Wielding Man Damages Planned Parenthood Clinic

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Southern Indiana police have arrested a man who allegedly used an ax to smash windows and damage computers at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bloomington.

The Herald-Times reports Bloomington police arrested 27-year-old Benjamin D. Curell on Thursday on preliminary burglary and criminal mischief charges.

Capt. Joseph Qualters says Curell vandalized the clinic about 4 a.m. Thursday and also splashed red paint on the building. The Ellettsville man allegedly attributed his actions to his religious beliefs, saying Planned Parenthood employees murder babies.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana President and CEO Betty Cockrum says the clinic’s front door was destroyed and the front office and some equipment were heavily damaged, but says the clinic’s damage is still being assessed.

No one was in the building at the time of the break-in.
