COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) – A southern Indiana sheriff wants to extend the time his county keeps videos captured at the local jail.
 
Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett has proposed keeping digital jail videos for up to a year to help protect the county against lawsuits.
 
Jail Commander Maj. Gary Myers tells The Republic that the proposed upgrade would allow video from some of the jail's 204 cameras to be kept for nine to 12 months. Those who want to sue the county have 180 days to file a tort claim notice.
 
Gorbett calls the proposal “very cheap insurance.” He says he has about $50,000 in his budget to apply to the project but has asked the County Council for another $60,000.
