FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Board of Zoning Appeals gave the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission the final green light needed for a new facility.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, the board said the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission could build the $17.5 million facility on East Washington Boulevard and Lafayette Street, according to the News-Sentinel.

The new 85,000-square-foot facility would replace its overcrowded shelter on Superior Street. The Fort Wayne City Council approved the location last week and the Fort Wayne Plan Commission has also approved the project.

The move has faced opposition. Those opposing the move said it wouldn’t have a positive impact on the neighborhood. Some residents said the shelter would attract more homeless people to congregate downtown.

Others are concerned that the new location, which is across the street from a liquor store, might not be the best idea.

Now that the Board of Zoning Appeals approved the area, the mission can buy the property. It is expected to be bought within a couple weeks.
