Catholic Clerics Accused of Sex Abuse Have Area Ties

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A civil suit against three Roman Catholic clerics who served in the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese in the 50s through 70s was filed Tuesday in Minnesota by two men who claim they were victims of sexual abuse as minors, that according to The Journal Gazette. The abuse allegedly took place at Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minnesota, when the two victims were students there between 1979 and 1981.

The three clergymen were associated with the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross, also known as the Crosiers. The order operated a seminary in Syracuse known as Our Lady of the Lake.

Rev. Gerald Funcheon, one of the accused clerics, was sued in Allen County in 2007 in connection with alleged abuse at a Catholic Youth Organization camp at Lake Wawasee, and has faced lawsuits alleging abuse in other states. According to court documents, Funcheon has admitted to abusing as many as 18 children and teens, and possibly has more than 50 victims altogether.

Funcheon was also a teacher and athletic director at Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in the 60s, and a teacher and administrator at Wawasee Preparatory School in the 70s. He also may have been involved with the Boy Scouts in the Warsaw area.

The victims also claim they were abused by two other religious brothers, Gabriel Guerrero and Wendell Mohs. Guerrero worked at Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in the 50s, and Mohs lived in the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese in the 70s. Mohs also attended St. Francis.

The new Minnesota cases come after the Diocese of Minneapolis-St. Paul filed for bankruptcy, and said anyone could come forward with claims until Aug. 3.

None of the accused clerics who were sued have been criminally charged.
