Coats Introduces Bill to Help Hoosier Charities

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO):

Senator Dan Coats introduced legislation Thursday that would require the IRS to notify nonprofits before their tax-exempt status is automatically revoked. Currently, charities and other nonprofits automatically lose that status if they don’t file annual information returns for 3 years in a row. In the last 4 years, over 11,000 charities and nonprofits in Indiana have lost their tax-exempt status without “adequate notice from the IRS” as noted in a release from Senator Coats’ office.
