Donors Help Historical Bridge Find New Purpose

DELPHI, Ind. (AP) _ A bridge that once spanned Big Walnut Creek near Greencastle will find a new purpose in Delphi this fall.

The iron structure was removed from its Putnam County site to make way for a concrete bridge. It has been restored for its new location on the Wabash and Erie Canal.

Wabash and Erie Canal Association president Dan McCain tells the Journal & Courier that the Indiana Department of Transportation requires bridges with historical value to find new homes when they're dismantled. The state has a website for “orphaned'' bridges where communities can seek one that fits their purposes.

McCain says donations allowed Delphi to restore the bridge. It will become a vital part of Canal Park this fall.
