FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Taxpayers will be asked to weigh in on a building referendum for East Allen County Schools in November.

The board voted to put the $87.5-million referendum on the November 8th ballot by a 5-2 vote last night, according to the Journal Gazette.

Superintendent Kenneth Folks says the district is facing out-of-date science labs, aging buildings, and below-standard security issues in most of their schools. The referendum is also meant to address overcrowding at some EACS schools.

If passed, a home valued at $100,000 would see an increase of a little over $30 a year in property taxes. Most of the money would go to the district’s New Haven locations, including $34-million to renovate New Haven High School.
