Educators Worry Revamped ISTEP+ Test Will Take Too Long

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana educators say they're worried students won't have the stamina to complete the state's revamped ISTEP+ test.

The Journal Review reports (http://bit.ly/1uJ0PKJ ) that testing schedules recently received from the state suggest it could take some students three times longer to complete the new exam than the old one. The test will assess students' mastery of new math and English benchmarks that were established as part of Indiana's waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind requirements.

Educators say they were told last year that the new test would be more rigorous but weren't prepared for the additional time it could take.

Department of Education spokesman Daniel Altman says the new test adds more open-ended questions that are tied to the tougher standards and will take more time to answer.
