Elkhart Teens Appeal Convictions in Death of Accomplice

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) _ Three Elkhart teenagers have asked the Indiana Supreme Court to review their convictions in the 2012 shooting death of a friend during an attempted break-in.

A jury in 2013 convicted Blake Layman, Anthony Sharp and Levi Sparks of felony murder in connection with the death of 21-year-old Danzelle Johnson. A fourth teen, Jose Quiroz, pleaded guilty.

The South Bend Tribune reports the four teenagers and Johnson were trying to burglarize an Elkhart home in 2012 when the homeowner fatally shot Johnson and wounded Layman.

A judge sentenced Layman and Sharp to 55 years in prison and Sparks to 50 years.

The Indiana Court of Appeals in September upheld the convictions but ordered the sentences reduced.
