TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – An Indiana game warden who died in the line of duty has finally received a grave marker 89 years after his death.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says Game Warden William Nattkemper drowned in a boat accident on the Wabash River near Terre Haute on April 27, 1926.

When current conservation officers learned the grave had no marker, a Go-Fund-Me internet site raised more than $2,000 for one.

A ceremony Thursday at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute will dedicate the grave marker. Nattkemper family members from around the country are expected to attend.

Nattkemper was part of a crew of game wardens destroying illegal fishing nets when a waves created by high winds swamped their boat. Nattkemper's body wasn't recovered until three days later.
