Fort Wayne installs dam safety signs along Maumee, St. Joseph Rivers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The death of a kayaker on the Maumee River is causing Fort Wayne to enact some safety measures.

The City of Fort Wayne is installing over 30 signs and buoys along the St. Joseph and Maumee Rivers. This is to let everyone know of the dangers of small dams. The signs warn you of the dangers of dams and the strong recirculating currents nearby.

Sean Heibel died last year after his kayak capsized near the Hosey Dam, which is located on the Maumee River near the North Anthony and East Washington intersection.

This is the first community in Indiana to offer these type of signs.
