Fort Wayne Road Conditions Among Poorest In Mid-Sized Areas

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Compared to other Mid-sized Urban Areas, Fort Wayne roads rank in the top 25 for poorest conditions in the nation. However the city is doing much better than Large Urban Areas with a population of more than 500,000 people.

In a report released by by TRIP, a national transportation research group based in Washington, D.C., 27% of roads in Fort Wayne are listed as “poor.” In 2013 more than one quarter, or 28% of the nation's major urban roads, had pavements that were in substandard condition and provided an unacceptably rough ride to motorists.

The nationwide annual cost of driving on deteriorated roads totals $109.3 billion, and the average motorist in is losing $516 annually in additional vehicle operating costs as a result of driving on roads in need of repair.

The report says increases in travel since 1990 have resulted in a significant increase in wear and tear on the nation’s roads. Vehicle travel growth rates began to return to pre-recession levels in 2014 and increased further in early 2015.

The worst roads in the nation were San Francisco / Oakland, CA (74% poor), Los Angeles / Long Beach / Santa Ana, CA (73% poor), Concord, CA (62% poor), Detroit, MI (56% poor), and San Jose, CA (53% poor).
