FWCS Crisis Teams Help Students with Mental Health Issues

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A new program at Fort Wayne Community Schools will help young students who are struggling with mental health issues.

Teachers will go through a 40-hour, week-long course to build the Crisis Intervention Teams for Youth-  focusing on the basics of mental illness and active listening.

The Journal Gazette reports a total of five Hoosier cities have been chosen for the new training program, and teachers will work alongside the Fort Wayne Police Department as well as the National Alliance of Mental Illness of Fort Wayne.

Mental Health issues are often mistaken for delinquent behavior in school and nearly 70 percent of children and teens in the juvenile justice system struggle with a diagnosable disorder, according to the Journal Gazette.
