Gay Couples’ Indiana Celebration Could be Derailed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Gay marriage supporters want a federal judge to deny Indiana's request that he stay his order striking down the state's ban on same-sex marriage.

Attorneys for the national gay rights group Lambda Legal argued in a document filed Thursday that a stay would be unfair not only to gay couples in general, but particularly to a lesbian couple who already had been granted an exception to the prohibition because one has a terminal illness.

The Indiana attorney general's office has asked Judge Richard Young to stay his order Wednesday requiring the state to recognize gay marriages performed in Indiana and other states.

A line of gay couples seeking marriage licenses stretching all the way outside the Marion County City-County Building greeted officials when they reopened 8 a.m. Thursday.
