Goshen Names New Mascot

GOSHEN, Ind. (WOWO): From Redskins to Red Hawks.

That's the name of the new Goshen High School mascot. The moniker received 53 percent of the vote from Goshen High School and Goshen Middle School students and staff, as well as GHS alumni. School officials say they have no plans to remove anyone from a Goshen Schools event if they still choose to wear the name Redskins, adding that they won't be disciplining any students who wear Redskins shirts or so-branded merchandise.

The new mascot comes after the Goshen School Board voted in July to retire the controversial mascot. The issue was raised by two parents in June, who separately requested the the mascot be retired over concerns that “Redskins” may be offensive to Native Americans and inspire bullying in school.
