ATTICA, Ind. (AP) _ A western Indiana company that makes steel castings has laid off 85 workers just two months after more than 70 other workers lost their job.
Harrison Steel Castings Co. said Friday in a statement that global political and economic uncertainties have forced the workforce reductions at its Attica plant. The company says the layoffs were needed “to weather the current storm.”
The Journal & Courier reports the layoffs have left the plant which makes carbon and low alloy steel castings with a workforce of about 560. That’s roughly half of what the plant’s employment was before the global recession hit the manufacturing sector.
Attica Mayor Bob Shepherd says the layoffs are disappointing and a blow to the community of about 3,200 residents.
