The Indiana State Police would like to share the following safety tips to help ensure your holiday shopping experience is safe—and that your packages stay out of the hands of the infamous “porch pirate.”

In-Store Shopping Tips

• Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.

• Park in well-lit areas and always lock your vehicle.

• Use extra caution when walking to and from your vehicle. If possible, shop with a friend.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use checks or credit cards whenever possible.

• Do not leave purses unattended in shopping carts.

• Place gifts and other valuables in your vehicle’s trunk.

• Make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition.

• Carry a fully charged cell phone with you.

• If shopping with children, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you become separated.

• Report any suspicious activity to store security or the nearest law enforcement agency.

• Remember, the most important tip is knowing who and what is around you.

Online Shopping Tips

For shoppers who prefer to avoid crowds and long lines:

• Use credit cards or PayPal for online purchases.

• Before entering personal or credit card information, make sure the website address begins with “https:” rather than “http:”. The “s” indicates the site is secure and encrypted.

• Avoid clicking on pop-up links.

• Ensure your malware and antivirus software is up to date.

• Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for online shopping.

Package Delivery Tips

• Do not leave delivered packages unattended for extended periods.

• Customize deliveries to a location not visible from the street.

• Utilize security or doorbell cameras.

• Pay close attention to delivery notifications.

• Consider using porch lock boxes for added security.
