MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) – Police say eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 in northwestern Indiana have reopened the day after a deadly pileup that involved more than 40 vehicles.

State Trooper Dave Andrews says the highway reopened to traffic Friday morning, nearly 20 hours after the chain-reaction crash started.

Officials say heavy lake-effect snow was falling near Michigan City when the crash happened Thursday afternoon on the busy highway between Chicago and Detroit. Motorists were driving at highway speed when they suddenly hit whiteout conditions.

Authorities say a couple from Grand Rapids, Mich., and a Chicago man died from the crash, with more than 20 other people injured.

Crane and wreckers were brought in to remove the wreckage that included several semitrailers.
