Iconic General Electric sign to come down due to vandalism

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):The historic General Electric sign is coming down.

GE said the sign has been vandalized and needs to be dismantled.

If weather permits the sign will come down Tuesday. Crews will dismantle the GE logo, letters, and support structure, according to a press release.

A spokesperson said once the sign is removed it will be stored in a building on site. Officials hope that by taking down the sign it won’t deteriorate further.

The company says that intruders have been climbing onto the building for at least the past year. As a result, the lights were turned off last year.

GE says no final decisions have been made on the future of its former campus. General Electric plans to continue to work with the city of Fort Wayne to find a solution for the property.
