EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP): Indiana's prosecutors and judges say they're still adjusting to sweeping changes to the state's criminal code.

The changes that took effect July 1 are intended to send more nonviolent criminals to community corrections and jails instead of state prisons.

 

Vanderburgh Superior Court Judge Wayne Trockman says it's too early to assess the effectiveness of the changes because people who committed crimes before the changes took effect are still being sentenced under the previous code.
But shifting more offenders away from state prisons and into the care of local jails and programs comes with a cost.
Republican state Rep. Greg Steuerwald says finding the funding for local resources to support that shift is going to be “a major topic” when lawmakers reconvene Jan. 6.
