INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): An Indianapolis police officer has been suspended without pay after he was charged as part of an investigation of the mishandling of criminal cases.

33-year-old Cory Owensby was indicted by a grand jury in an investigation that began last year. An indictment says narcotics, fake IDs and counterfeit money in his police car when it was searched as part of the investigation in June 2013. They were related to cases Cory Owensby was involved in.

Owensby is the son of local Fraternal Order of Police president Bill Owensby and was released after he was booked at the Arrestee Processing Center. Owensby will be suspended without pay pending a termination hearing by the IMPD Merit Board.

“Any misconduct by one of our employees is taken seriously,” said Chief Hite. “I want the community to know that IMPD’s internal systems identified the issue and we acted on the accusations. Officers are expected to act within department policies and the law; those who choose not to will be held accountable.”

A special prosecutor from Jefferson County has been assigned to the case.
