INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Permit holders can start cutting firewood July 1 in designated areas of Indiana State Forests for home heating.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says this year the price will go up $7 to $10 per for a rick, or standard pickup truck load. State officials say it's the first increase in more than 30 years for firewood permits. The cost is $25 for three ricks.

Every year about 1,000 firewood cutting permits are sold in the state. The state projects revenues of about $10,000 a year.

The areas where cutting is allowed are where managed timber harvests have been completed. Standing trees can't be cut. Those cutting the wood are expected to have appropriate protective gear.

Oak, maple, yellow poplar, hickory and other hardwoods are available.
