KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) – Businesses and homeowners throughout Indiana are trying to recover from damage caused by more than two dozen tornadoes and other storms that hit Indiana.

Kokomo announced it was waiving some permit fees until Dec. 20 to try to help make recovery efforts easier.

Indiana Department of Homeland Security spokesman John Erickson said Wednesday state officials are still assessing whether there's enough damage to request federal disaster aid, and he doesn't know when a determination might be made. He says the state has 30 days after Sunday's storms to decide. Erickson says the state is gathering damage estimates to see if the state might qualify for federal aid.

Indiana utilities report more than 5,600 homes and businesses remain without power, primarily in Kokomo, South Bend and Marion.
