INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ An Indiana Department of Education spokesman says the agency it will comply with rules governing the distribution of poverty aid to charter schools after federal officials notified the state it shortchanged them in some cases.
Spokesman Daniel Altman says the agency will ensure the schools receive the money they're entitled to.
Federal rules say that states must give districts and charter schools at least 85 percent of their previous year's allotment of Title I funding to keep programs consistent.
State schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz said last week that declining enrollment of low-income students at some Indiana charter schools could mean those schools were no longer eligible for Title I funding. She asked the U.S. Department of Education for help determining the proper funding levels for such schools.
