Indianapolis Passes Pre-K Proposals

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): A City-County Council committee passed two proposals related to the Indianapolis pre-kindergarten program.

The council‘s Community Affairs and Education Committee passed the first proposal which approves the United Way of Central Indiana as the administrator of the pre-K program. Deputy Mayor of Education Jason Kloth says the United Way is a great choice, calling them the leader in central Indiana in expanding high-quality early childhood education in the past.

Kloth says the city had three main criteria in searching for a program administrator. He says they were looking for expertise and knowledge in the area of early childhood education, the ability to handle a program of this scale and and a strong desire to serve as that administrator. The second proposal approved four-point-seven million dollars in funding for the first year of the program.

Councilor Jeff Miller pointed out that no new taxes were being raised and no public safety funds were being used to pay for the program.
Both proposals were passed unanimously and now head to the full council for consideration.
