INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is turning to social media to help improve public safety and drive community interaction.

The department announced a partnership with the neighborhood-focused social media website Nextdoor on Thursday. The department said in a news release that users of Nextdoor will be able to find safety updates, emergency notifications, as well as information about services and programs offered by the police.

Nextdoor is a free social media service that allows residents to create private neighborhood-focused websites to share information about community on-goings.

IMPD previously conducted a successful Nextdoor pilot program in some parts of the city, which they now will expand citywide.
