Indy Man Dies When Run Over by Garbage Truck

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ An Indianapolis garbage man has died after being struck by the garbage truck whose crew he was a member of.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works says 45-year-old Thomas Welch died Monday morning as he worked a garbage route.

Details on how Welch was struck were not immediately available Monday. He was part of a two-person crew on the truck.

DPW Director Lori Miser says Welch’s death has left the department “unspeakably saddened.”

Welch had worked for the city for more than five years until 2010 and then rejoined the department last December.
