INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Senate has narrowly approved a Republican-led push to repeal the state law that sets wages for public construction projects.
Senators voted 27-22 Wednesday to support eliminating the boards that set wages for state or local projects costing more than $300,000.
Gov. Mike Pence and other repeal supporters say it would save as much as 20 percent from the cost of building projects by allowing more contractors to pay wages below union scale.
Opponents argue the change would open the door for low-paying, out-of-state contractors.
The Senate vote comes two days after thousands of workers rallied at the Statehouse against the repeal.
The House earlier approved a similar bill, and a final agreement must still be reached.
