FORT WAYNE, IND. (WOWO) Drivers across northeast Indiana are being urged to prepare for winter driving conditions as snow and bitter cold temperatures move into the area.

The Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post says troopers will begin clearing abandoned vehicles from the shoulders of interstates, state roads, and U.S. highways starting Saturday evening. The effort is intended to assist the Indiana Department of Transportation as crews work to clear and treat roadways ahead of the winter storm. Police warn vehicles left on the shoulder can be struck by cars that slide off icy roads.

State police recommend drivers prepare before winter weather arrives by checking tire pressure and tread, testing batteries, replacing worn wiper blades, and topping off winter-grade washer fluid. Drivers are also encouraged to carry emergency kits that include blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, and traction aids such as sand or kitty litter.

Once on the road, police advise motorists to dress for winter conditions, fully clear snow and ice from vehicles, reduce speeds, and increase following distance to as much as eight to ten seconds on slick roads. Cruise control should be avoided, and drivers are reminded to buckle up and avoid distractions.

Troopers also urge patience around snowplows and remind drivers that road condition updates are handled by INDOT, not law enforcement. Road conditions can be checked through INDOT TrafficWise or by dialing 511.
