ISTA Urges Pence to Seek Accountability Delay

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana's largest teachers union is urging Gov. Mike Pence to support freezing the state's education accountability system for one year because of changes in the ISTEP test.
Indiana State Teachers Association President Teresa Meredith asked Pence in a Tuesday letter to “follow common sense'' and support a one-year moratorium of the state's accountability system that evaluates schools' and teachers' performances under the test.
The retooled ISTEP test that will be administered next spring will assess students' mastery of Indiana's newly adopted math and English benchmarks that changed after Indiana pulled out of the Common Core standards.
Meredith says students' scores are expected to be lower than normal on that test.

Indiana Department of Education spokesman Daniel Altman says the Legislature has final say on whether Indiana pauses its accountability system.
