INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana's largest hospital system says it will cut about 800 jobs as part of a move to reduce costs and adapt to changing trends in health care.
 
Indiana University Health officials announced Thursday the cutbacks at its Indianapolis-area hospitals and those in Muncie and Tipton. Officials say the system is trying to save $1 billion over five years and that the job cuts will be made by December.
 
IU Health president James Terwilliger says the cuts reflect declining reimbursement rates and fewer patients using hospitals because of changes in how health care is delivered.
 
The 19-hospital system will offer some employees early retirement.
 
Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health announced in June it was making similar cuts.
