INDIANAPOLIS (AP): A state lawmaker says Indiana should stop approving new charter schools until it determines why increasing numbers of them are failing.

Rep. Greg Porter tells the Indianapolis Business Journal he's alarmed by the increasing number of charter schools receiving a D or F and says it's time to top taking a “shotgun approach” to approving the schools.

More than half the charter schools in Marion County received a D or an F, up from 30 percent two years ago. The percentage is slightly lower statewide but also has increased.

Porter is calling for a moratorium on new charters so legislators and educators can evaluate what's working and what isn't among the 64 charter schools currently serving traditional K-12 students.

Six organizations can authorize charter schools in Indiana.
