FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The man accused of hitting a construction worker on I-469 says he was distracted by a blonde road worker.

Roger Caley, 64, of New Haven was arrested Tuesday on two preliminary charges of leaving the scene of a crash.

At about 11:25 a.m. Monday, the highway worker was on I-469 a couple miles east of U.S. 27. While he was working, a red Ford pick-up truck hit him.

When officers stopped the red truck, Caley told police he hit a construction barrel, according to our news partners at 21Alive.

He later admitted to police that a blonde construction worker caught his eye while he was driving on I-469. He also eventually told police the truck he was driving did hit a man.

The construction worker was rushed into surgery to reconnect his arota valve. He was also treated for a lacerated spleen, a lacerated kidney, broken ribs and minor head injuries. It is possible he could be paralyzed.
