Man charged with murder after wife dies following house fire

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A Fort Wayne man accused of setting a house fire that left his wife with severe burns now faces a murder charge following her death.

Allen County prosecutors charged 54-year-old Eddie Lee Caldwell with murder on Monday. The charge came three days after Caldwell’s 68-year-old wife, Lizzie Lee Caldwell, died from respiratory and renal failure due to severe burns she suffered in the Sept. 12 fire.

Caldwell was facing charges before her death that included arson resulting in serious bodily injury.

A neighbor said Lizzie Lee Caldwell arrived at her house the day of the fire hysterical, smelling of gasoline and covered in burns to her shoulders, back, and chest.

She was taken to a hospital’s burn unit in extremely critical condition.
