CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) _ A Gary man whose murder confession was thrown out by the Indiana Supreme Court has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to reckless homicide.

The state's high court tossed McLynnerd Bond Jr.'s confession in May after ruling that a police detective had gone too far by telling Bond he might not get a fair trial because he is black.

The Gary detective's fair-trial comment likely contributed to the 28-year-old Bond's confession in a 2007 slaying.

Court documents say the ruling means officers cannot obtain a confession by misleading suspects into believing they won't receive a fair trial because of their race.

The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/VrxybJ ) Bond, who was sentenced Thursday, pleaded guilty in July to reckless homicide in Kadmiel Mahone's fatal shooting.
