New Program Places Student Teachers in Evansville Schools

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ More than a dozen student teachers are participating in a pilot partnership between the University of Southern Indiana and Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp.

The project puts the student teachers in classes at two high-poverty schools with hopes of turning the schools around. The two-year program is called “Teach Now, Transform Tomorrow'' and involves eight student teachers at Lodge Community School and seven at Lincoln Elementary School.

Terri Branson is one of two University of Southern Indiana instructors who hold classes for student teachers at the elementary school during the week. He tells the Evansville Courier & Press that student teachers' course loads have been pared back so they can focus on their students.

Advisers also have been working to adjust students' schedules so they can participate in the program.
