NW Indiana Police Shoot, Kill Gunman at City Hall

LAKE STATION, Ind. (AP) _ Police say an 84-year-old man armed with a shotgun was fatally shot by officers after he fired the weapon outside a northwestern Indiana city hall and aimed the weapon at them.

The Lake County Coroner's Office identified the gunman as John Laco of Portage. Laco was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m., the coroner's office said.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Bob Byrd says three Lake Station officers shot Laco. Witnesses told The Munster Times they heard an initial bang followed by about a dozen gunshots. It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the incident in Lake Station, about 5 miles southeast of Gary.

Byrd says about 20 detectives from departments around the region and Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting.
