Officer who shot gunman could face tough recovery

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): An Indianapolis police officer could face a difficult emotional recovery after killing a gunman who had fatally wounded another officer.

Officer Maurice Shipley shot Steven Byrdo Sept. 20 moments after Byrdo had shot Officer Rod Bradway as he ran to the aid of a woman Byrdo had been holding at gunpoint for hours.

Experts say emotional scars from even the most justified shootings can haunt officers for years. Retired police officer Lance LoRusso says studies have shown that 70 percent of officers involved in deadly shootings leave their department within five years.

Shipley is on desk duty pending a review of the shooting. He'll be required to meet at least once with the department's Employee Assistance Program and will be offered counseling.
