INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — How to fix Indiana's roads is likely to become an even more charged political issue as Republican Gov. Mike Pence's re-election campaign unfolds.

Democrats hope to exploit the issue, which could raise anger among voters on both sides of the political divide. They have bombarded Pence over the issue ever since a month-long emergency closure of an Interstate 65 bridge near Lafayette last summer.

The governor responded last week by proposing a $1 billion plan to rehab state highways in the coming five years, while denying the state faces a crisis.

Still to be worked out is where to find financing to repair the roads, whether lawmakers will go along with Pence's plan, and if the state should look to a tax increase as part of a long-term solution.
