INDIANAPOLIS (AP): A new $9 million information management system unveiled by Gov. Mike Pence earlier this month relies heavily on troves of data that state government has long had.

But former Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith says it gives Indiana new tools to use that data to predict the best use of government resources.

Goldsmith details the efforts of Indiana and others in his new book, “The Responsive City.”

Goldsmith says new technology has given government leaders a chance to overhaul how and where tax dollars are spent so they can make the most of scarce resources.

The first test for Pence will come when he introduces his next budget proposal in January. He's expected to lay out which programs he plans to eliminate.

Goldsmith now teaches government management at Harvard University.
