Pit bull owner sentenced to jail for mauling of 2 women

DELPHI, Ind. (AP): A northern Indiana man has been sentenced to four years in jail after his pit bulls mauled two women during a walk.

A Carroll County judge ordered the jail time for 51-year-old Richard Darter of Cutler after he pleaded guilty to eight misdemeanor counts of dog bite liability causing serious injury for the October 2015 attack by four of his dogs.

Twenty-year-old Rebekah Forgey of Kokomo tells the (Logansport) Pharos-Tribune that she spent 10 days in an Indianapolis hospital and has undergone skin grafts on her head and leg.

A motorist rescued the women by driving into the field about 20 miles east of Lafayette during the mauling and helping them into the car.

Darter tried to stop the mauling, and he and Forgey’s friend suffered less serious injuries.
