Police Arrest Man for Climbing Monument Statue

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indianapolis police say they arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly climbed onto a statue at downtown Indianapolis' Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and refused to come down.

Osmer A. Meza was arrested Monday on preliminary charges of criminal trespass, resisting law enforcement and other charges. He was later released on his own recognizance.

The Indianapolis Star reports police say Meza climbed onto the statue that's more than a century old and refused officers' repeated demands to come down. Police say Meza did not leave the statue at the base of the monument until an officer began climbing it to force him down.

Officers have alerted the Indiana War Memorial Commission about the incident so that officials can assess whether the statue may have been damaged by Meza.
