ANDERSON, Ind. (AP): Indiana State Police say a trooper who happened upon an armed robbery at a central Indiana convenience store has shot and wounded the fleeing suspect who pointed a gun at him.

Police say the on-duty trooper had stopped at a Ricker’s convenience store in Anderson on Monday morning when the clerk reported the store had just been robbery and pointed at a man getting into his car.

Police say that after the suspect, 22-year-old Ricky B. Zimmerman of Pendleton, pointed a handgun at the trooper, the officer shot him through both wrists. They say Zimmerman’s car continued across a street and struck another car.

Zimmerman was taken to a hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation. The trooper’s name hasn’t been released.
