Purdue Northwest Picked as Name of Merged Campuses

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Purdue University Northwest has been picked as the new name for the merger of the school's two regional campuses in northwestern Indiana.

Purdue's Board of Trustees on Friday approved the name that will cover the current Purdue Calumet campus in Hammond and Purdue North Central in Westville.

Purdue officials announced in February plans to combine the administration of the campuses while continuing to offer classes at both locations, which are about 35 miles apart and total about 15,000 students. The new name will be phased in over the next two years.

The new name mirrors the Indiana University Northwest name for IU's campus in Gary.

Suggestions for the new name had included Purdue University Lakefront and Purdue University South Shore, reflecting the proximity of the campuses to Lake Michigan.
