Ritz Spokesman Blasts Proposed School Authority Shift

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): A spokesman for Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz says Republicans are showing disdain for Indiana voters with their move to shift authority over education policy from her office.

Spokesman Daniel Altman said a proposal Wednesday from Republican lawmakers would leave her as State Board of Education chairwoman in name only despite delaying until 2017 a change in state law allowing the board to elect its own leader.

The proposals would give the board dominated by appointees of Republican Gov. Mike Pence authority over the ISTEP standardized test and the state private school voucher program. Pence says the board is the proper overseer of such programs.

Altman says the moves on the last day of the legislative session are an attack on voters who elected Ritz in 2012.
