FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — Multiple people were injured Tuesday afternoon after a semi-truck lost control and crashed into a laundromat on West Jefferson Boulevard, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

According to WPTA, the crash occurred around 1 p.m. at Laundry Xpress, located at 2439 W. Jefferson Blvd., across from SweetCars.

Police said the semi was traveling westbound on Jefferson Boulevard when the driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the laundromat parking lot. The truck struck three vehicles before the chain-reaction collision sent one of the cars through the front of the laundromat and into the building.

Authorities said the semi partially entered the structure, while an SUV and a pickup truck that were also struck by the semi crashed into the front of the building.

The semi driver was briefly pinned inside the truck and had to be rescued by emergency crews. Officials reported the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Inside the laundromat, several washing machines were damaged in the crash. Police said at least five people inside the building were injured, all with non-life-threatening injuries. One person became trapped beneath debris and required assistance to be safely removed from the building.

Fort Wayne Police Department Public Information Officer Adam Hartman described the outcome as fortunate given the severity of the crash.

“It’s a big miracle that no one was seriously hurt or even died in this crash,” Hartman said.

Emergency crews remained on the scene Tuesday afternoon as investigators worked to determine what caused the semi driver to lose control. Traffic on West Jefferson Boulevard was reduced to one lane, causing significant delays in the area.

The crash remains under investigation.
