INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Two Republican state senators are sponsoring a bill that a critic says would allow the teaching of creationism in Indiana's public schools.
The bill filed by Sen. Jeff Raatz of Connersville and Senate Education Committee Chairman Dennis Kruse of Auburn calls for school officials to create an environment for students to learn about differing theories on what it calls controversial scientific subjects.
Raatz tells the Journal & Courier he's not bothered by people calling the proposal an anti-evolution bill. He says it aims to allow discussion of competing theories in the classroom.
Glenn Branch of the National Center for Science Education says the new bill would allow a few teachers to misrepresent the state of the scientific consensus on issues such as evolution and climate change.
