SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WOWO): Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson is facing criticism after a video surfaced showing him discussing residents who oppose proposed data center developments in the community.

In the video, which appears to have been recorded without his knowledge, Furgeson is seen holding a “No Data Centers” sign while speaking with a group of women seated at a table.

During the conversation, the mayor references signs opposing data centers that have appeared throughout Shelbyville. Furgeson suggests many of the signs are located at rental properties. When one woman challenges that assertion and says the signs are also common in working-class neighborhoods, Furgeson responds that many of those homes are rentals.

The video has since circulated online, prompting criticism from some residents who argue the comments dismiss concerns about the proposed developments and the people expressing them.

The debate over data centers has become a significant issue in Shelbyville, with supporters citing potential economic benefits and opponents raising concerns about land use, infrastructure demands and quality-of-life impacts.

It was not immediately clear whether Furgeson planned to address the comments publicly. The discussion over future data center projects in Shelbyville remains ongoing.
