Shipshewana Man Drowns after Being Swept into Lake Michigan

Michigan City, Ind. (WOWO): A LaGrange County man is dead after he was swept off a pier into Lake Michigan, authorities say 24-year-old Earl Helmuth of Shipshewana was pushed off the Lighthouse Pier in Michigan City around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Helmuth was with a group of five other friends who were taking photos at the time.

Three of the friends were able to make to make their way from the water to safety, two more had to be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Helmuth body was recovered Sunday in about 12 feet of water. The search had to be suspended Saturday night after treacherous conditions.
