FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): There's a new way to skate in Fort Wayne this winter.

Weather in recent years has not cooperated enough for the Lakeside Park pond to properly and safely freeze over for skaters. So the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department on Monday installed a portable ice rink on the basketball court at Lakeside Park.

When the temperatures drop, the rink will be filled with 4 to 6 inches of water so that ice skaters can skate safely without the risk of falling into the pond.

Skaters can skate on the portable ice rink for free…as long as the rink is filled and frozen, of course.
